Federal by-election coming to Brantford—Brant South: what we know so far

BrantVotes focuses on the County of Brant — but part of the county votes in this federal riding, so here is what we know about the coming by-election. A date has now been called: Monday, December 7, 2026. We will update this post as candidates are named.

Why there is a by-election

Conservative MP Larry Brock resigned on September 18, 2026, to return to the Crown attorney’s office in Brantford. Elections Canada received official notice that the seat for Brantford—Brant South was vacant on September 21, 2026, and a by-election will be held to fill it.

When will it happen?

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the by-election on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Voting day is Monday, December 7, 2026. Brantford—Brant South is one of six ridings voting that day, alongside Scarborough North, Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Laurier-Sainte-Marie and Yorkton-Melville.

Who is running so far?

  • Kevin Davis — Conservative. The sitting mayor of Brantford, appointed as the Conservative candidate on September 20, 2026.
  • Joy O’Donnell — Liberal. Announced October 31, 2026. A Certified Financial Planner, she was also the Liberal candidate in the 2025 federal election.
  • Dave Carrol — Independent. Announced October 28, 2026, after seeking the Conservative nomination. He has been endorsed by former Brantford—Brant MP Phil McColeman and Haldimand—Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady.
  • New Democratic Party — to be decided. The riding association was set to hold a nomination meeting in late October or early November.

What happened last time?

In the 2025 federal election, the Conservatives took 52.44% of the vote in this riding, the Liberals 41.09%, and the NDP 3.66%.

Does this riding cover the County of Brant?

Partly. Brantford—Brant South covers the City of Brantford, the southerly part of the County of Brant, and the Six Nations and New Credit reserves. The rest of the county — the northerly part — votes in the neighbouring riding of Flamborough—Glanbrook—Brant North, which is not part of this by-election. If you are unsure which riding you are in, Elections Canada’s voter information service can confirm it.

County of Brant Community Energy Plan — help shape Brant’s energy future

The County of Brant is developing a Community Energy Plan to better understand how energy is used, supplied and planned for across homes, businesses, farms, transportation and County operations. The plan will look for practical ways to use energy more efficiently, conserve energy, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and plan for future needs. A Renewable Energy Roadmap will also explore renewable and lower-carbon options that could suit Brant. What it will not do: the County does not control energy supply, pricing or utility expansion, and this plan will not extend
