Let’s be honest: keeping a farm or a rural business thriving in 2026 isn't just about hard work and rich soil; it's about staying competitive and keeping our infrastructure up to date. I had no idea until recently that the County has just opened up a massive opportunity for those of us living outside the urban hubs of Paris and St. George.
The Rural Prosperity Community Improvement Plan (RPCIP) officially launched this May, and it is essentially a "helping hand" from the municipality to ensure our rural heartland doesn't just survive, but flourishes. If you've been looking to spruce up your storefront, upgrade your farm signage, or even build a place for the next generation to live on the property, this post is for you.
What is the Rural Prosperity Plan (RPCIP)?
In simple terms, the RPCIP is a strategic grant program designed to inject life and capital into the rural parts of our County. We often talk about "standing at a crossroads" when it comes to local development, and this plan is Council's way of choosing the path of reinvestment.
The program aims to reduce the financial burden of property improvements. Whether you are running a farm-gate market, a rural tourism attraction, or a small commercial shop in one of our many hamlets, the County is offering to share the bill for your upgrades.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
This is where we need to look at the map. The RPCIP isn't for everyone: it’s specifically tailored for the rural parts of the County of Brant.
- The Geographic Area: You must be located outside the urban settlement areas of Paris, St. George, and Burford.
- Property Types: The grants are open to farmers with diversified uses, rural tourism operators, and owners of commercial or mixed-use properties in our rural hamlets.
- Compliance: Your property needs to be in good standing with the County's Zoning By-laws and Official Plan.
The "Big Three" Grants: Façade, Signage, and Housing
The County has broken the funding down into several categories, but three of them are generating the most buzz at the kitchen tables across the County right now.
1. The Façade Improvement Grant
We all take pride in our stunning historic architecture and the well-kept look of our rural buildings. This grant supports the "curb appeal" of your business. If you need to upgrade windows, doors, or the cladding on a building visible from the road, the County can cover up to 50% of the eligible costs. It’s about making sure our rural businesses look as professional and inviting as anything you’d find in a big city.
2. The Signage Improvement Grant

In the rural world, if people can’t find you, they can’t support you. This grant is a game-changer for farm-gate sales and tourism spots. It helps fund high-quality, professional signage that tells the world who you are and what you do. Improved visibility means more "farm-to-table" success for everyone.
3. The Housing / Residential Unit Improvement Grant
This is perhaps the most critical piece of the puzzle for our farming families. As our community grows, keeping the "heart" of the farm together means finding ways to house the next generation. This grant provides funding for Additional Residential Units (ARUs).
Whether it's converting a portion of a building or setting up a secondary suite, this funding helps cover the costs of making those units a reality. It’s a direct investment in the family fabric of our County.

The Fine Print: How the Process Works
Now, I don't want anyone to miss out because of a technicality. The most important rule to remember is this: You must have your application approved BEFORE you start any physical work. The County won’t write a check for a project that’s already finished.
Here is the step-by-step breakdown:
- Pre-Application Discussion: You must contact the Economic Development staff first. They are there to help you navigate the rules and confirm your project is eligible.
- Submit Your Application: You’ll need to provide details on the project, quotes from contractors, and a clear plan of what you intend to do.
- Review and Decision: Staff and Council will review the proposal. Remember, funding is limited and is handed out on a first-come, first-served basis within the annual budget.
- Agreement and Work: Once approved, you sign a financial agreement and get to work!
- Payment: After a final inspection to see the beautiful results, the grant money is paid out.

Why This Matters for Our Community Identity
We often hear about "fiscal responsibility" at Council meetings, but true responsibility also involves investing in the assets we already have. By supporting our rural entrepreneurs and farmers, the RPCIP helps maintain the Community Identity that makes Brant so special.
When we support a local farm in upgrading their façade, we aren't just helping one business; we are preserving the character of our roads and the viability of our local economy. It’s about ensuring that the County of Brant remains "Simply Grand" for the decades to come.

The Countdown is On! 🗳️
The spring intake is currently open, but the budget for these grants is set annually. If you’ve been sitting on a project idea, now is the time to act. Don't let the opportunity to "Boost Your Farm" pass you by this season.
Do you have questions about how these grants might affect your taxes or the upcoming municipal election? Or maybe you’ve already started the application process? We’d love to hear your experiences!
